May is here and it is a lovely time to get outside and go to where orchids grow, so we have planned a trip to Chadwick’s Greenhouse on May 3. Art Chadwick will give a talk on ”Cattleyas with Large Lips.” The Chadwicks, father and son, specialize in cattleyas. In orchid circles, Art and his father is very well known and has written books about cattleyas and their care. Art has given talks in Hawaii, Las Vegas, and many other places. When it was held in France he was a speaker at the World Orchid Congress. We are lucky to have a speaker that is knowledgeable about catts living this close to Richmond, and who will let us come to his greenhouse and learn about these cattleyas and their culture.
The Chadwicks have a practice of naming a cattleya for each of the First Ladies and then presenting it to her. In Orchids magazine they have quite a list of those plants. His parents are a lovely couple who love to dance and have turned their family room into a dance floor where they can dance to their heart’s content.
For those who do not know Art, he started a business here many years ago and it has grown to include a lovely store downtown where he sells orchids and a greenhouse where you may have your plants cared for until it is time for them to bloom, then they will be delivered to you to enjoy. Thousands of plants are kept this way. This will be an interesting meeting that you will not want to miss. Of course there will be no Show Table for the plants, but there will be plants for sale there.
Meet at Chadwick’s by 2 p.m. and we should be able to leave no later than 4 p.m. to return.
